About Norma

Norma is a senior midwifery student, in Phase 3 of the PEP process. They spent 2.5 years working as a doula before beginning her journey into midwifery. She has a passion for serving Black and low-income families. Her birth philosophy is rooted in equity, education, sovereignty, and holistic personalized care. In practice, they like to blend traditional and spiritual elements to guide care while utilizing medicine if and when it is called for.

They hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Duke University. Currently, they are pursuing a Certificate in Mental Health from Eastern Kentucky University, with plans to begin their Master’s of Social Work within the next year. Experience in these research heavy fields allows her to continue to utilize evidence based practices far before they become mainstream and use discernment in the information found.

Norma worked as an EMT before and during the height of COVID-19 prior to transitioning into social work in late 2020. Her experience in both fields is something she values deeply. Emergency medicine helped to further develop her ability to be steady in times of high stress and gives her confidence in the ability to recognize true emergencies and take action without hesitation. Working within medicine has allowed them to more easily dissect and translate medical jargon into regular language. Social work taught her how to find resources within any community and connect clients and friends with helpful organizations.

Outside of birthwork, Norma enjoys spending time in nature. You can often find her hiking trails or kayaking on nearby waterways. They are an avid reader and film junkie, hoping to hit their goal of 100 books and movies this year. Her dog, Autumn, and cat, Butter, keep her company when they aren’t driving her crazy. She does not yet have children of her own but is a proud auntie.
